Community Life

Living In Town and in close proximity to the University provides residents a rich culture and access to a variety of arts and recreational activities. Museums and art galleries, professional theater, music ensembles and symphony, visiting artists, national performers, and sports events are typical in this bustling area.

Housing

There are several residential communities In Town and neighboring the campus that are primarily made up of small (studio to two bedroom) to medium sized (three or four bedroom) single-family homes and small apartment buildings. Many of the residences in the area are older, well-established, and built between 1940 and 1969. A number of residences were also built between 1970 and 1999. You'll also discover newer home opportunities. The eclectic flare that these areas of Las Cruces have to offer inspire many residents to live in the downtown and University areas.

The Farmers and Crafts Market

The Farmers & Crafts Markets of Las Cruces has existed for almost 50 years and features hundreds of vendors. All of the goods sold by our vendors are hand-made and local. Everything from the jewelers and metalwork to the paintings and fiber, art, has been produced in Doña Ana County. Not to mention, all fruits and veggies are homegrown as well. You have to try the Southwest Kettle Corn!

Breweries

Mesquite Historic District

The five local, homegrown breweries in Las Cruces are Icebox, High Desert, Spotted Dog, Picacho Peak, and the Pecan Brewery. Additionally, you’ll find taprooms for Bosque (from Albuquerque) and Little Toad Creek (from Silver City), and Truth or Consequences Brewery (from T or C) as well.

The Rio Grande Theatre

The Rio Grande Theatre, originally built in 1926, is a restored performing arts center in the heart of Downtown Las Cruces. It is the only operating 2-story adobe theater in the country and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The theater features a wide selection of entertainment from local, regional and national recording artists and performing arts, to a classic film series and Saturday children’s matinee program.
